Come Meet Our Young Eagle Pilots

Maybe you've flown with them before. Maybe you'll fly with them at our next rally. Either way, take a moment and get to know a little about the pilots in our Chapter that continuously donate so much of their time, energy, and yes, $$$, to provide our youth with such a wonderful and memorable experience. For those that have email we've provided a link. The one's that don't, we have provided a link so you can forward them a message through our Young Eagle Flight Leader and he will ensure that they receive it promptly. We look forward to seeing you in person at one of our next rallies.

Steve Taylor began flying at the age of 14 through the Civil Air Patrol. He soloed in 1975 on his 16th birthday - 30 days before receiving his driver's license. "The joke at the time was that I had to ride my bike to the airport so I could fly an airplane." In 1997 Steve became involved with the EAA after observing a Young Eagle Rally by Chapter 52. He served as the Young Eagle Coordinator for the Chapter from 1998 through 2002. Steve also served on the Board of Directors from 1999 through 2000. In addition to the Young Eagles he is also the Chapter's Flying Start Coordinator, and developer of the Chapter web site. He is a Instrument rated pilot, and at rally's you'll typically see Steve flying a Cessna 172. Steve re-joined the Civil Air Patrol in 2001 and flys search and rescue, counterdrug missions, and also serves as their Public Affairs Officer for Northern California Group 5.

Missions Flown: 230

Bob Kane is probably one of our most experienced active pilots with over 16,000 hours. Bob began his flying in the Air Force in 1943 and obtained his single, multi-engine, and instrument rating during that time. Bob retired from the Air Force in 1966, and then spent 5 years flying with World Airways. Bob spent the remainder of his career as executive of a local bank. Bob joined the EAA and Chapter 52 in 1998 because he had a great interest in war birds, antiques, and the Young Eagle program. Phil Key (email Phil)
Missions Flown: 118

Phil Key first realized his desire to fly at the early age of 7. After completing his enlistment in the Army, Phil began to take flying lessons and obtained his Private Pilot's License in 1969. From there he made use of his GI Bill and obtained his Commercial Rating and Multi-Engine in 1970, and Instrument Rating in 1971. In 1976-77, Phil went on to obtain his CFI and CFI-I. Phil has maintained these ratings every since. Phil joined the EAA in 1977. He got involved with Chapter 52 to meet new people and to learn all he could about home-built aircraft. Phil enjoys the local Chapter activities, such as the fly-ins and Young Eagle's, that EAA and Chapter 52 provides. For people thinking about joining EAA, Phil recommends also joining a local Chapter as a great way to make new friends with similar interests. Phil serves in the position of Treasurer for the Chapter. He also serves as one of our Flight Advisors since 1998. Phil can be frequently spotted in the blue skies over Sacramento flying his beautiful red T-18 Thorp.

Dorothy Flynn (email Dorothy)
Missions Flown: 262

After raising a family, and retiring from a career, Dorothy Flynn decided she needed to do something new. At a time when most people are thinking of slowing down, Dorothy was embarking on a new adventure. She got together with a friend and took a flight in a Cessna 150. She got the bug for flying and decided "I've got to do this." So in 1978 she began taking lessons at the Cal-Aggie Flier's Club at the University Airport in Davis, CA. She now has over 2000 hours and holds an Instrument Rating, Commercial License, and is also a Certified Flight Instructor! Dorothy has been flying Young Eagles with us for many years. She finally became a member of the Chapter in 2000 because she was so impressed by the organization and enthusiasm of the Chapter. She enjoys the friendly atmosphere and the wide variety of aviation interests and activities. You can see Dorothy flying Young Eagles in her Piper Arrow at almost every event. Dorothy is also a member of the Sacramento Ninety Nines.
